Challenge

LNER required a fast-tracked, high-quality development at Durham Station to improve passenger experience and increase VIP capacity. 

The site posed complex challenges:
Operating within a live railway station environment with stringent safety compliance
Precision groundwork required to strengthen and revamp old raft foundations on both platform sides
Designing and delivering bespoke  waiting areas with full service integration in just 12 weeks
Ensuring 24/7 platform accessibility for passengers during works

Solution

Foundation Works & Site Prep
Excavated both platform flanks to revamp existing concrete raft foundations
Laid new slab foundations for the 2 custom waiting rooms
Fabrication & Structure Installation
In-house fabricated steel and perlin frames for structural strength
Built and installed 2 fully glazed VIP waiting rooms with aluminium curtain walling and commercial-grade entrance systems
Full Fit-Out & Systems Integration
Installed all required services including water, drainage, and electrics
Connected and commissioned air conditioning, fire detection, CCTV, access control, and data systems
Delivered high-spec interior finishes to match LNER's premium customer expectations
Surface & External Finishes
Carried out full resurfacing of platform surroundings with tarmac, paving, and high-durability line markings
Installed manholes, drainage channels, and surface water controls
Completed with external illuminated signage and wayfinding assets
